LINCOLN, Abraham, President. Autograph free frank signed ("A. Lincoln") as President on an envelope addressed in his hand to "Hon. Post-Master General" [Montgomery Blair (1813-1883)], and with Lincoln's note that the envelope contained a letter "Introducing Miss Dugger & Miss Beattie." [Washington, D.C., 21 March 1864]. 1 page, a small oblong (3 3/16 x 6 1/8 in.), front panel only, slight tears neatly mended, inlaid to a protective sheet. A LINCOLN FREE FRANK ADDRESSED TO THE POSTMASTER GENERAL. In his letter, Lincoln informed Blair that "these young ladies...are from Illinois, & want employment. They are loyal & worthy, and I shall be very glad if places can be found for them..." As Basler notes, Miss Dugger, of Carlinville, Illinois, did find work in the Post Office and later in the Treasury. See Collected Works, ed. R. P. Basler, 7:257-258.
