BLAEU, Willem and Joannes BLAEU. Atlas Mayor sino Cosmographia Blavania, En La Qual Exactamente se Descrive la Tierra, el Mar, y el Cielo. Amsterdam, circa 1658-1672.

10 volumes, 2o (558 x 352 mm). Text in Spanish, mounted on guards throughout. 6 hand-colored engraved titles (of 12, volume IV in two parts with 2 engraved titles). 544 (OF 547) ENGRAVED MAPS, PLANS, VIEWS AND PLATES, MOST DOUBLE-PAGE some folding, full-page or within the text, and 49 additional engraved maps COLORED THROUGHOUT IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND AND HEIGHTENED WITH GOLD. Contemporary Dutch vellum with bold Spanish ink lettering to spines, remnants of leather ties, edges gilt (rebound, contemporary sides and spines laid down but becoming loose, worn). Provenance: Marques de Astorga (18th-century letterpress bookplate on titles or first leaf in each volume).

A VIRTUALLY COMPLETE SET OF THE SECOND SPANISH EDITION, one of the rarest of Blaeu's large atlases which was never completed. "When fire destroyed the Blaeu printing-house at the Gravenstraat in Amsterdam in 1672, the final volume was in the press and consequently lost. This volume was to contain the maps of Africa and America, probably to be incorporated in volume XI. But also the sheets for the volumes I-X were only availalbe in a limited quantity which is proved by the fact that the second copy, here mentioned, is partially composed of sheets which have been made from two leaves, pasted together: the one with the Spanish text, the other with the map and French, Latin, or Dutch text on the back." (Koeman). It is very likely that several plates from the volumes I-X were destroyed by the fire in 1672, but that printed sheets with the Spanish text were saved in sufficient quantities. The above copy includes numerous of these pasted sheets and corresponds very closely with Koeman Bl 60 B; Shirley 428. This set comprises:
