2o (505 x 357 mm). Title-page with engraved vignette, 51 hand-colored engraved double-page maps, 8 letterpress tables, 2 hand-colored, and 2 engraved plates. (Perforated stamp to title and last leaf, title-page with some very light soiling to fore-edge.) Contemporary half morocco and marbled boards (minor wear to edges).

A fine copy of Buchon's version of Carey and Lea's important American Atlas, first published in Philadelphia in 1822 with 46 maps. The atlas comprises 34 maps of North America, most of individual states, including Washington D.C., and 17 maps of Central and South America and the West Indies. The majority of the maps are set within explanatory letterpress text borders. A printed sheet Association pour l'exploitation des Mines du Mexique is tipped in after the map of Mexico. Phillips 1176.
