HERRERA, Antonio de (1559-1625). Description des Indes Occidentales...le Nouveau Monde. Amsterdam: Michel Colin, 1622.

2o (286 x 190 mm). Engraved title, 17 engraved double-page or folding maps and charts, engraved illustrations in text (browning and staining to maps, title and last leaf with perforated stamp.) 20th-century half morocco (wear to spine ends and edges).

First Edition in French. "The volume is valuable as containing the first edition of the genuine Voyage of Le Maire (also issued in Latin and Dutch in the same year) as distinguished from that which had been, through the Dutch India Company's jealousy of Le Maire, published by Blaeu under the name of Cornelius Schouten, who had commanded one of Le Maire's vessels. It concludes with the Spanish and English voyages to Magellan's Straits and the descriptions of the America given by Ordonez de Cevallos and Bertius" (Sabin 31543 "the French translation has not the portrait of Le Maire);" Alden & Landis 622.67; Tiele 295.
