Text volume, small 2o (329 x 218 mm) and 4 atlas folios (705 x 545 mm). Hand-colored lithographed frontispiece and 504 (of 510) lithographed plates, 51 hand colored (lacking plates 155, 179, 277, 294B, 296 and 440, some occasional pale foxing and staining, first 10 in vol. 3 with some chipping along bottom margin). Text bound in contemporary black half morocco (spine partly defective, worn), atlases in contemporary mottled boards, red morocco lettering-pieces (a bit worn at the extremities, some hinges cracked). Provenance: Pierre J.H. Jeffreys (bookplate in text); Jay Gould (1836-1892), American financier (Lyndhurst bookplate).
FIRST EDITION OF CHAMPOLLION'S SCARCE WORK. Champollion studied Hebrew, Syriac, Ethiopic, Arabic, Persian, Sanskrit, and in particular Coptic. His main interest was Egyptology, and he recovered the key for the understanding of the hieroglyphs. He conducted this systematic survey of Egypt in 1828-29 accompanied by Rosellini with whom he planned the publication of this work. He died while the book was being produced. The text is lithographed throughout, reproducing Champollion's manuscript. NYPL calls for 511 plates, but only 510 are listed in the index of plates (one plate is listed twice). Blackmer 310 (499 plates only); Brunet I:1780 (calling for 500 plates); Graesse II:116.
