Gothic types 1:180(160) (titles, head-lines, headings), 3:82 (text). Paragraph marks, capital strokes and underlinings supplied in red. Large decorated initial L in red on a2. Vol. II: Aa10 Bb-Zz 1-7 AA-HH8 II10. 315 leaves (of 316; without the final blank). Paragraph marks, capital strokes and underlings supplied in red. Three decorated initials supplied in red, 4 initials in quire 6 supplied in brown. Vol. III: A10 B-N NN O-Y8 Z \\i6. 196 leaves (of 198; without the title [A1] and final blank), with the title to the second volume added contemporaneously and corrected in manuscript. Lombard initials supplied in red. Large initial L on A2r supplied in red and green. Vol. III: contemporary South-German blind-tooled pigskin over unbevelled wooden boards, central panel filled with Rautengerank and rosettes, outer border tooled with floral stamps and rosettes, contemporary manuscript titling across upper and lower edges, evidence of clasps (a bit rubbed). Provenance: Vols. I and II: Monastery of St. Nicholas at ?Rotemany (contemporary monastic inscriptions); quotations in an early hand on titles. Vol. III: Rottweil Dominicans (monastic inscriptions on pastedown and title). Sold as a set to Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate; purchased from Dawson's Bookshop, Los Angeles, 1 August 1941); donated to SMS 1941.
Second editions. J.B. Schneyer proposes that the "Meffret" of the title may be identified with Magister Petrus Meffordis of Leipzig ("Winke für die Sichtung... lateinischer Predigtreihem," Scriptorium 32, 1978, p.239). At the death of Bernhard Richel in 1482, his son-in-law Nicolaus Kesler took over the press. Under Kesler the press became one of the most important in Basel, producing predominantly theological, homilitic and canonical texts.
