Lot Essay

Similar pairs of candelabra are held in the collection of James A. Rothschild at Waddeston Manor, the Victoria and Albert and Louvre Museums. The design for the model probably post dates 1785, the justification being that the waistcoat with flared ends was replaced in 1786 by a type terminating in a straight edge, such as the boy is wearing.
