A large famille rose bowl for the Turkish market
Second half of the 18th century
the exterior decorated with gilt Quranic inscription within two cartouches on a deep blue ground reserved with gilt bands of stars alternating with cresent moons, all below a broad band of Arabic calligraphy encircling the rim, the interior with further Quranic inscriptions within blue enamel bands -- 13½in. (34.5cm.) diam. (rim fritting).

Lot Essay

This bowl is very similar to pieces in the Topkapi Saray Museum. See R. Krahl and J. Ayers, Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum, Istanbul, 1986, vol.lll, dustjacket, colour plate p.946, and pp.1291-3. Similar tureens and covers are in the usee Guimet, Paris, and the Musee d'Art et D'Histoire, Brussels.
