A Siena large mythological plate
Circa 1740, probably painted by Ferdinando Maria Campani
Probably depicting the abduction of the Sabine women, the centre with Roman soldiers grappling with struggling women in a clearing in a wooded landscape, the middle foreground with a soldier seated on a cloak laid over a rock, wearing the laurels and armour and with his right arm out-stretched towards the group, the foreground with large dark rocks and a tree-stump, within a brown line and ochre band rim (the centre with overpainting to conceal flaking, underside of rim with extensive flaking to glaze)
12½ in. (31.8 cm.) diam.
