Lot Essay

The view of Unter den Linden with the Brandenburg Gate in the distance is derived from an engraving by Friedrich August Schmidt after a drawing by Friedrich August Calau. For another vase in the Berlin Museum with a similar view (but with some of the figures in the street omitted), see Dietmar Jürgen Ponert, 'Berlin Museum, Kunstgewerbe I, Keramik' Catalogue (Berlin, 1985), p. 118, no. 113. This form of vase, Vase Medicis Rhedensche Sorte, was named after Graf Wilhelm von Rheden who was Chairman of the KPM Commission.
