A Meissen group of two South American Parrots
Circa 1745
Modelled by J.J. Kändler, one parrot preening the other, their plumage in iron-red, yellow, green, purple and black, perched on rockwork before a fruiting cherry tree, one leaf with a caterpillar, the base applied with flowering branches, wild strawberries and a bee (restoration to three wings and tails, the tree broken in two places and repaired, one break disguised by applied leaves and the tree's porcelain upper half possibly a replacement, some restoration to leaves and flowers, extended firing crack to base)

Lot Essay

The Meissen manufactory Jahrbuch for April 1745 includes the following entry under Kändler's name: Für die Königin 2 Indianische Vögel in Dressden poussirt, wie solche nebeneinander sitzen, darbey Bläume mit Kirschen und anderen Früchten befindlich, a later reference from January 1747 refers to the preparation of wax originals for making the moulds, 1 neues Groupgen zerschnitten, woran unterschiedliche Pappagoys befindlich sind.
