Lot Essay

A study for the large picture painted by Sermei for the Sala Maggiore of the bishop's palace of Assisi and today kept in the Museum of the Cathedral of San Ruffino in Assisi (G. Sapori, Raccolte communali di Assisi, Disegni 1, Milan, 2001, pl. 23). The picture was commissioned in 1640 by the bishop Tegrimio Tegrimi.
The drawing shows numerous differences with the picture but other pen and brown ink preparatory drawings, kept in the museum in Assisi, are closer in composition to the present sheet (G. Sapori, op. cit., nos. 201-3). Three further chalk drawings for the Saint and his assistant are also in Assisi (G. Sapori, op. cit., nos. 204-6).
