YORKSHIRE v. LANCASHIRE, 1901

Details
YORKSHIRE v. LANCASHIRE, 1901
cricket ball mounted with round silver plaque, hallmarked Sheffield, inscribed: "Yorkshire v Lancashire at Manchester, May 27th & 28th 1901. 5 wickets for 54, 7 for 23, Yorkshire won by 9 wickets presented to George H. Hirst by Lord Hawke," on base of silver stumps, Sheffield, 1900, 5½ in. high.

Hirst's success with the ball in 1901 owed much to the development "of his remarkable ability to make the ball swerve in the air. This swerve was almost as revolutionary as the googly that B.J.T. Bosanquet was to use three years later ...." (A.A. Thomson Hirst and Rhodes, 1985, p. 37).
