, printed scorecard, showing Hirst's bowling figures of 35 for 4 and 9 for 5 in the two Australian innings (slightly torn at foot). Wisden makes special note of how in the 2nd innings Hirst "got rid of the best batsman, bowling Trumper with one of his deadliest swervers."
AN 18-CENTURY GOLD OPEN FACED-CENTRE SECONDS KEYLESS LEVER POCKET WATCH, by Fillans and Sons, Huddersfield, 1900, gilt finished lever movement, white enamel dial with Roman numerals, spade hands, case with engraved monogram initials "G.H.H", cuvette with engraved inscription: "presented to George Herbert Hirst by his Huddersfield District Admirers in recognition of his admirable coolness of pluck in the Test match England v Australia at the Oval August 11, 12, 13, 1902," diameter 51mm. England won by one wicket after the odds had been fifty to one on Australia. Hirst took 5 for 77 in the 1st innings and 1 for 7 in the 2nd, and at no. 8 scored 43 and 58 not out, partnering Jessop who made 104. "Hirst's innings was in its way as remarkable as Jessop's. So coolly did he play ...." (Wisden).
