G.H. Hirst Album
Congratulations to George Herbert Hirst on his Benefit, and upon obtaining the World's First Class Cricket Record of 2385 runs and 208 wickets in one season, 1906, commemorative album, 4°, 78pp., containing mounted letters, cards and telegrams referring to Hirst's 1904 benefit and his 1906 record, also including a mounted menu for the Complimentary Dinner to HCC 2385 runs, 208 wickets at the Cherry Tree Hotel, Huddersfield, October 9, 1906, contemporray brown half morocco, title lettered in gilt on upper cover.

The earlier letters, written not to Hirst himself but to J.C. Town, concern subscriptions for his benefit, ranging from the 10/6d contributed by Cooper, Dennison & Walkden, manufacturers of inks, to higher figures of one or two guineas. A letter from F. Stanley Jackson to J.C. Town, dated Junior Carlton Club 7.7.04, explains that Lord Allerton has already made his subscription through him. A second letter from Jackson to Hirst, dated Allerton Hall, Leeds, 2.9.06, congratulates him on his "magnificent achievement of 2000 & 200 -- all Yorkshire and Yorkshiremen are proud of you." Some messages are from unknown fans. A Kinsella postcard with frankmark "Sheffield Aug 31 06" states: "Hearty congratulations from a Sheffield admirer." The final telegram is from [A.E.] Stoddart: "Heartiest congratulations on your wondeful performance Stoddart." Hirst's benefit on August Bank Holiday 1904 was given to him for "twelve years of splendid service" and amounted to £3,703, then a considerable sum. Thomson describes his unprecedented "double double" as the triumph of "a naturally powerful forcing batsman" and "fast bowler with a bounding run and full swinging arm" (Hirst and Rhodes, 1986, p. 54).
