"CLARRIE" GRIMMETT
six-leaf manuscript in Grimmett's hand, undated, consisting of some dozen anecdotes about the game, the leaves randomly numbered 1-2, 5-7, with one unnumbered, text unbroken, versos blank.

Many of these anecdotes recall the remarks or quirks of behaviour of umpires, the first recalling an episode on the Bodyline Tour when Jardine obstructed Grimmett's efforts to take "an easy catch" off his own bowling to Hammond. "Later on the umpire George Hole asked me why I didn't appeal as he would have had to give Hammond out for obstruction by Jardine." Two of the stories concern Bradman, one "in my early days with South Australia" when his quick return from mid-off not only sent Bradman scampering back to the crease but knocked him to the floor. "This was one way of getting him out." Another story describes how "against NSW in Sydney" it was advice from the crowd that enabled him to find the right changes of bowling tactic against Bradman. "I think in my experience the most knowledgeable crowd in the world was in Sydney."
