ENGLAND v. AUSTRALIA, 1930
Don Bradman bat, manufactured by William Sykes, London, signed on the face by the England and Australian sides, headed in red and black ink: "The final test match, 1930, England Australia" (grip worn) -- Gradidge bat, manufactured by Slazenger, London, signed by the Australian touring team, 1953 (signatures faded).
The Oval Test in August 1930 was a remarkable one. Even though England scored 405 in their first innings, Sutcliffe making 161 before being caught by Oldfield off Fairfax, the massive Australian reply of 695 with 110 from Ponsford at no. 2 and 232 from Bradman at no. 3 put England out of contention, and the tourists eventually won the final Test by an innings and 39 runs, Hornibrook taking 7 for 92 in England's second innings.
