brown wool cap, with white and black silk crest of Prince of Wales feathers surmounting the Surrey Club monogram, inside label of E.C. Devereux, Eton Bucks, inscribed in ink "Hobbs."

The "Master" played 598 matches for Surrey, 1905-34. In 24 English seasons he completed 1000 runs, going on to 2000 17 times and in 1925 reaching 3000. His highest score was 316 for Surrey v Middlesex at Lord's in 1926, but he made 15 other scores of 200 or more. Rated by some contemporaries as a more attractive batsman than Bradman and more capable on difficult wickets.
