A 19th-Century French travelling beam balance,
in an oak and mahogany case, stamped P CHARPENTIER A PARIS -- 25.4cm. (10in.) wide
The steel beam incorporates an index to read off a scale 10-0-10 at the top of the brass column. The brass pans are suspended on chains and the lifting lever at the base of the column is stamped with a crown and the initial P. The whole is mounted on the top of the mahogany case; the draw within has a brass pull and contains nesting weights for gros and grammes, and nine small weights in a separate compartment.
