A 19th-Century 1¾-inch German "Earth and Its Inhabitants" terrestrial globe,
by Carl Bauer, in a card box.
See Colour Illustration and Detail
The globe is made up of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores with axis pin-holes at either Pole and all text in German. The cartouche reads Die ERDE in kleinem C.B.. The equatorial is graduated in degrees; the ecliptic, colures and meridian are not shown. The continents show little detail beyond rivers and the names of some nation states, and are delicately shaded in yellow, green, pink and orange. The marbled paper-covered card box has an attractive label pasted to the lid showing an Englishman, an African, a Persian and a Pacific islander around a cartouche The Earth with its Inhabitants; to the inside base of the box is pasted a long strip of hand-coloured engraved paper showing attractive pictures of twenty-eight members of different nationalities, each labelled in English and German.
