A late 19th-Century 6½-inch diameter terrestrial globe on a bronze Atlas figure,
the globe by J. Forest, Paris, the figure on a red marble base -- 44.5cm. (17./2in.) high

The sphere is made up of twelve chromolithographed gores and two polar calottes laid on a wood and plaster sphere, surmounted by a brass acorn finial. The equatorial and the meridian at 30°w (Paris at 0°) are graduated in degrees; the ecliptic is ungraduated. The oceans show ocean currents, pack ice, marine flora, navigation routes and the maker's cartouche: GLOBE TERRESTRE Dressé par J. FOREST GÉOGRAPHE EN À PARIS MonFOREST 19 Rue de Buci 19 with a legend. The continents are shaded pink, yellow and green with red outline for the nation states, and show rivers, towns, cities, railways and telegraph lines. The sphere is held on a short limb from a cross-bar held aloft by the kneeling Atlas wearing a loincloth.
