The 19cm. (7½in.) long index arm is attached to the instrument by means of a hollow octagonal square-backed bolt. It is mounted on the volvelle with scales for hours 1-12 (x2) with quarter-hour subdivisions, and days 1-29. The volvelle has two indexes to read off the calendar scale around the circumference of the main part of the instrument, showing months with abbreviations and two-day subdivisions, with an hour scale 1-12 (x2) with quarter-hour subdivisions. The reverse shows incised scales for both bears, labelled GB and LB, around a central star motif. There is a small finial stamped with small star motifs, and a pierced heart-shaped handle, also with the small star motif repeated, and stamped BOTH 1691 BEARS
