Details
A fine and rare late 18th-Century English lacquered-brass Sisson-pattern theodolite,
signed on the silvered compass face (Benjamin) Cole Fecit, with a mahogany and brass tripod and a mahogany carrying case -- 33cm. (13in.) wide
See Colour Illustration and Detail
The 24.7cm. long telescope has sliding covers for the objective lens and eyepiece, the latter with draw tube focusing. A brass-cased bubble level is mounted on top with turned finial end pieces. The telescope is raised on a shaped support to a compass joint with an index arm and double-sided vernier; this is graduated on one side to read off a semi-circular scale 40°-0-40° and ungraduated on the other side to read off a Links scale 25-0-25. The vernier is held in place when not in use by a pin with two scroll-headed curved arms. The scale is held between two inswept supports to the main compass joint, over the glazed compass case with shaped iron needle; the silvered face has a brass-cased bubble level, a wind rose with eight compass points and a circumference scale in four quadrants. The compass and the whole upper part of the instrument turn around an engraved brass circumference scale 0-360° with two ungraduated verniers at the base of the inswept supports. This in turn is raised on a turned brass tripod or staff mounting. The tripod has a corresponding brass mounting with a ball and socket joint adjustable via four screw feet. The case has some green felt padding, leather strap holders, and two brass catches.
