An unusual 19th-Century lacquered-brass surveying level,
signed on the dial ADIE LONDON, the simple cross-hair and pin-hole sighting tube -- 23.2cm. (9 1/8in.) long

The black-lacquered sighting tube has a bubble level mounted above, and a vernier attachment at one end graduated 0-30°. This is arranged to read off the vertical arc, graduated 0-85°. The glazed compass is graduated 0-360° and 0-90° (x4) with a four-point engraved wind rose and eight compass points, and has an edge-bar needle with jewelled cap and screw clamp. A bubble level is also mounted on the compass limb, by the ball and socket mounting for the sighting tube. A staff mounting with ball and socket joint is mounted beneath.
