An attractive late 18th-Century English shagreen-bound reflecting telescope,
signed on the back plate W. & S. JONES, 30 Holborn, London --46.4cm. (18¼in.) high

The 61.5cm. long body-tube is bound in green fishskin (some repair to the underside and joins) and has primary and secondary speculum mirrors, dust cap, screw-rod focusing, star-finder and eyepiece extension tube. It is mounted on two bars attached via a pair of screws on either side and tilting between two curved A-frame supports. The right-hand side has a vertical half-circle with a racked edge, adjustable via a mahogany adjustment handle. The A-frames are on a flat brass platform beneath which is a horizontal circle with a racked edge for adjustment via a second handle. This is raised on a tapering brass column to a circular platform with three folding inswept legs, terminating in scroll feet.
