Marie Gullichsen, the founder of Galerie Artek in Helsinki, met Alexander Calder through Fernand Léger and the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto in the late 1930s. However, it was only when contact was renewed after the Second World War that the pair became friends. This friendship eventually resulted in an exhibition of Calder's mobiles at Galerie Artek in 1958.
