Each with shaped toprail above a pierced vase-shaped splat and later floral needlework-covered padded seat, on cabriole legs headed by floral sprays, on leaf-wrapped pad feet, with ash rails, each labelled with a red 'H' (6)

Lot Essay

A set of six chairs with similar backs was formerly in the Governor's Palace, Colonial Williamsburg and sold by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Christie's New York, 23 October 1982 lot 181 ($14,300). A similar chair is illustrated in H. Cescinsky, English Furniture from Gothic to Sheraton, 1929, p. 274.
