Lot Essay

The scrolled toprail is centred by Venus's shell-badge amidst 'Roman' foliage, while the serpentined legs and seat-rail are similarly adorned with the Love deity's badge, and the 'claw' feet evoke Jupiter's sacred eagle. A double-chairback settee, possibly originally part of the same suite, was sold by the Showering Family, in these Rooms, 21 November 1985, lot 164 (£26,000). It was illustrated in P. Macquoid, The Age of Walnut, 1905, fig. 205; and R. Edwards and P. Macquoid, The Dictionary of English Furniture, rev. ed., 1954, vol. III, p. 82, fig. 27.
