THREE ENGLISH MILITARY HANGERS
The first two mid-18th Century, the third late 18th Century
The first with curved single-edged blade double-edged towards the point and with, on each face, a single fuller and a running fox mark (ascribed to the Shotley Bridge workshop), and on one the mark of the Board of Ordnance and the maker's name 'Hosgrave', brass half-basket hilt of heart-shaped shell extending to the pommel, knuckle-guard with two curved bars on the outside, lobe-shaped rear quillon, and globular pommel with button cast in one with a writhen grip; the second closely similar, but without the name on the blade, the guard with single bar on the outside and inscribed '(M) CumberD 3'; the third with straight single-edged fullered blade, iron hilt comprising a half-basket guard with an elongated triangular shell continuing to the pommel as a knuckle-guard and with two curved bars on the outside, scent-bottle stopper-shaped pommel with button, and wire-bound wooden grip
