A SILVER-HILTED HANGER
Late 18th Century
With curved hollow-ground single-edged blade (rust-stained) double-edged towards the point, the 'slotted' stirrup hilt with knurled edges to the hand-guard, and incorporating a later applied fouled anchor in the knuckle-guard, ring for a sword-knot (missing), cap-pommel and spirally grooved dark horn grip, the grooves bound with U-section silver ribbon, in original leather scabbard (rubbed) decorated with stamped designs, and with silver mounts comprising mouth- and intermediate-lockets with suspension-rings, and chape, the first-named engraved with later(?) inscription 'Lemuel Wells New York'
