AN UNUSUAL DRESS SWORD
Partly first half of the 17th Century
With watered single-edged blade with gold-damascened Koranic inscriptions in arabic on one side and a eulogy on the other, iron guard from a hunting sword comprising downturned convex oval shell, flattened downturned rear quillon and crescentic knuckle-guard, and iron grip with bonnet-shaped cap-pommel, in wooden scabbard covered in blue velvet with iron mouth-locket from a hunting sword, fitted with two suspension-rings, the guard and locket each with punched silvered decoration on the inner side, the outer side decorated with encrusted silver flowers, foliage and berries, all against a punched ground and enriched with later applied silver scenes of the chase involving sportsmen, hounds and game, the grip en suite, and with owner's initials 'H' 'ME' (?) 'III' in gold, the pommel picked out in silver and gold (scattered surface rust throughout)
