A VICTORIAN OFFICER'S MAMELUKE SWORD

With good slightly curved flat-sided blade, etched with maker's details, foliate decoration, 'VR' cypher and rose, gilt metal crosspiece with cast decoration and écussons mounted with a white-metal rose (possibly replacing an earlier ornament), and ivory grips, in a fine plated scabbard mounted with ornate cast gilt mounts of distinctive 11th Hussar pattern

Lot Essay

The unmistakeable 11th Hussar pattern scabbard suggests that this weapon may have been made for wear in Levée Dress by a former officer of the regiment who transferred to one of the Yeomanry regiments who used the rose device. A manuscript label states that it belonged to the North Hampshire Yeomanry Cavalry. However the Yorkshire Hussars and Lancashire Hussars are also possibilities
