A VOLUNTEER OFFICER'S PRESENTATION SWORD
By Reddell and Bate, dated 1805
With curved fullered blade, as for a 1796 Light Cavalry sabre, bearing maker's name 'Reddell and Bate, Sword Manufacturers to The Hon.ble Board of Ordnance', etched for its full length with foliate decoration, 'GR' cypher, royal arms and various classical and patriotic figures, and inscribed 'The Non Commissioned Officers & Privates Of The Mulgrave Volunteers Present This Sabre To Lieut. Yeoman For His Kind Attention To The Corps In Bringing Them To That State Of Discipline Which Has Ever Met The Hightest Encomiums From The Different Inspecting Officers Aug 26, 1805' (the blade probably originally blued and gilt for two-thirds of its length, with traces of gilding now remaining, now with areas of severe pitting especially to the edge), good gilt-brass stirrup hilt with voided decorated knucklebow, langets with cast acanthus-leaf decoration, wire-bound ivory grip (some grip-wires insecure), and backstrap with lion's head pommel, in its black-painted wooden scabbard with decorative gilt metal mounts, the locket inscribed with maker's details as above, and fine acanthus-style shoe to chape (minor damage to mounts)

The Mulgrave Volunteers were operational in North Yorkshire from 1803 to 1808. The unit, consisting of some 112 all ranks, was commanded by Captain Francis Gibson, with Lieutenant Yeoman presumably as his second in command
