AN IMPERIAL GERMAN CAVALRY OFFICER'S SWORD

With fine massive slightly curved blade showing traces of etched foliate decoration and trophies of arms, deep ricasso inscribed with maker's mark (largely obscured by the langets), gilt-brass stirrup hilt (slightly loose), the ferrule and knucklebow guard cast with oakleaf and acorn decoration, the obverse langet bearing crossed swords and lances within a laurel wreath, the reverse langet with a blank shield, monster's head quillon and ornate backstrap terminating in a pommel in the form of a lion's head with two red glass eyes, fine wire-bound fishskin grip (some grip-wires loose) and embroidered leather sword-knot with massive worked silver tassel, in its plated scabbard with two brass bands and suspension-rings
