A STEEL-HILTED SMALL-SWORD
Circa 1760, probably French
With tapering blade of hollow triangular section, etched and gilt for most of its length with foliage, scrolls and trophies against a blued ground (some wear and surface pitting), the shell and knuckle-guard chiselled in low relief with scenes involving hounds and other animals, russet against a gold fish-roe ground, the pommel (associated) similar, chiselled with foliated scrollwork, one face of the quillon-block with later applied small gold cartouche stamped with a 'G' under a royal arm, and wooden grip (associated) bound with silver wire, in vellum-covered scabbard with mouth-locket original to the guard and later intermediate locket and chape
