Lot Essay

The silversmith's mark is probably a version of that registered by Daniel Shelmerdine (recorded 1681-1730), a member of the London Cutlers' Company, at Goldsmiths' Hall in June 1720. See Leslie Southwick, London Silver-hilted Swords, p. 220
