Aylward (p. 73) described this as a mourning sword on the grounds that the hilt was 'entirely blackened'. There is no obvious sign of this now

With associated blade of hollow triangular section, etched at the base with panels of strapwork, the hilt chiselled in relief with rococo scrolls, the asymetrical double-shell framing finely pierced panels of foliated scrollwork, the associated wooden grip bound with finely twisted steel wire
