A RARE STATE HALBERD OF THE GUARD OF WOLF DIETRICH VON REITENAU, PRINCE ARCHBISHOP OF SALZBURG (REG. 1587-1612)

With broad dated spike formed with a strong medial ridge on each side, axe-blade with shallow concave leading edge, flat downcurved fluke (small break) with reinforced tip, and rectangular socket secured by six rivets (one rivet-head and two decorative brass rosette-shaped washers missing), both sides profusely etched with volutes, strapwork, putti, masks and foliation, with two fawns face to face in the centre, all on a blackened ground, each side of the blade with the arms of von Reitenau quartered with those of the archbishopric, surmounted by a cardinal's hat and cords with a triple row of tassels, four long etched straps, and original oak staff bearing an old brass armoury tag numbered 'A 599'
