A COMB MORION OF THE SAXON ELECTORAL GUARD
Nuremberg, late 16th Century
Of one piece, with roped comb (minor dent) and brim, the base of the skull encircled by sixteen gilt-brass lion-masks capping the lining-rivets, each with a ring in its mouth, decorated with gilt etching (some wear throughout) comprising bands of scrollwork enclosing, on each side of the skull, figures of Mutius Scaevola and of Marcus Curtius leaping into the gulf, and on each side of the comb the arms of Saxony and the insignia of the Archmarshalcy of the Holy Roman Empire, later gilt-brass plume-holder cast in the form of a female term, and laminated chin-straps (one loose, the other detached and with broken leather), the brim struck with armourer's mark and Nuremberg mark
