The first signed Smith, Newcastle, early 19th Century
The first with short tapering barrels each with platinum-lined touch-hole, engraved tang, signed border engraved flat locks, rollers, and semi-rainproof pans, walnut half-stock (cracked above the right lock), chequered butt, engraved iron mounts including trigger-guard with pineapple finial, and silver escutcheon (iron parts rust-patinated, ramrod missing); the first dagger an Indian jambiya with fluted watered blade, the hilt damascened with flowers and foliage in gold and with ivory grips, in its velvet-covered scabbard; the second dagger a miniature kindjal, the hilt set with turquoises and imitation rubies, in its metal scabbard en suite
