AN UNUSUAL PAIR OF 16-BORE SPANISH MIQUELET-LOCK PISTOLS
Late 18th Century
With swamped two-stage barrels each with a ring at the muzzle and a chiselled girdle, the octagonal breeches with four gold-lined decorative stamps and the gold-lined punzón of Juan Esteban Bustindui of Eibar (Neue Støckel 124) and a silver band at the rear, gold-lined touch-holes, border engraved tangs, bevelled locks each with the punzón of Joseph Mendizábal of Placencia, moulded lightly carved walnut full stocks (one with cracked butt and chipped fore-end) inset with a silver panel at the barrel tang and under the trigger-guard, each panel pierced and chased with foliated scrollwork enclosing flower-heads and originally set with stones, silver spurred pommel en suite, and engraved and chiselled iron trigger-guard with the punzón of Antonio Doiztúa of Oviedo (Neue Støckel 248), turned iron ramrod-pipes, and wooden ramrods (in untouched condition with russet finish on the iron parts, the gold linings mostly missing from the punzóns, the ramrods not a pair)
