A FINE 32-BORE GERMAN WHEEL-LOCK BELT PISTOL
Dated 1579, probably Brunswick
With swamped two-stage barrel incised with a triangular panel of stylised acanthus foliage at the rear of the breech and in front of the intersection, plain tang, flat lock, flat wheel-cover engraved with radiating double lines of small slashes, sliding pan-cover with swelling release-catch, swivelling safety-catch, engraved cock with internal spring, full stock profusely inlaid with white staghorn bands partly engraved with overlapping foliage, and interlaced tendrils bearing ball-flowers and foliage inhabited by birds, profile heads, and a monster, compressed ball pommel with matching inlay inhabited by masks, iron trigger-guard interrupted by a chequered knop, pierced iron belt hook, engraved staghorn ramrod-pipe and fore-end cap, and later horn-tipped ramrod, in front of the lock a white staghorn panel (partly replaced) engraved with initials and the date (inlay with minor losses and replacements)
