A French gilt-brass and porcelain-mounted striking and repeating carriage clock
AB, No.359, retailed by Howell, James & Co., Paris. Circa 1885
The architectural case with bellflower cast stylised Ionic pilasters and Greek key handle, the Sèvres-blue porcelain side panels painted with classical ruins and a sculpture of a female deity respectively, within gilt-painted and white enamel jewelled borders, the conforming dial also painted with ruins beside a river, the chapter ring with individual gilt-bordered Roman cartouche numerals divided by red jewels, with retail signature to the centre HOWELL JAMES & CO. PARIS, with blued steel moon hands, the twin barrel movement with silvered platform to the bimetallic balance with lever escapement, strike/repeat on gong to the back plate with stamp for AB and numbered 359, with repeat number and maker's stamp to the base plate
