A French engraved gilt-brass and porcelain-mounted striking and repeating carriage clock
No.1934, retailed by Payne & Co., London. Circa 1870
The gorge case engraved with trailing leaves against a stippled ground, mounted with Sèvres-blue porcelain panels to the sides and top, the side panels painted with scenes of courting lovers in 18th Century costume, within gilt-painted and red-jewelled borders, the conforming top panel painted with musical trophies, the dial painted with gilt flowers and scrolls and embellished white enamel and red jewels, the white chapter ring with Roman numerals divided by further red jewels and painted with Cupid to the centre, with retail signature PAYNE & CO. 163 NEW BOND STREET LONDON, with blued steel moon hands, the twin barrel movement with silvered platform to lever escapement with bimetallic balance, strike/repeat on bell to the back plate with repeat signature and number 1934
