Stamped CL, attributed to Caspar Langenbucher, Augsburg. Circa 1570
The dial with twice XII outer chapter ring with touchpieces, later inner concentric Arabic 24-hour ring and innermost Arabic 12-hour ring centred by a roundel engraved with arabesque strapwork on a hatched ground, later blued steel hands, the spandrels cast as the four winds, the substantial movement with four baluster pillars screwed to the steel front and back plates, steel barrel and steel fusee wheel with brass body for the going train with re-built verge escapement with blued steel foliot balance and with restored hog's bristle regulation arm with blued steel pointer to an Arabic engraved scale (1 to 8), the strike train with similar gut fusee and barrel with later blued steel countwheel and strike on a bell housed between the plates, the back plate overlaid with a gilt-brass plate engraved overall with arabesque strapwork, the movement cover similarly engraved on both sides with arabesque strapwork and foliage and stamped to the inside with the maker's initials CL and Augsburg pineapple town stamp, the case cast in high relief depicting a host of figures, each panel centred by an enthroned woman flanked by satyr caryatids on foliate pedestals within entwined vines inhabited with winged grotesque beasts, each corner cast with a figure of a satyr herm flanked by twin pierced roundels set with semi-naked figures in high relief resting on a wall and leaning on an amphora, some figures wearing a turban, the moulded base resting on four crowned mask feet
