Lot Essay

The Arms are those of the Speke family of Liverpool. A very similarly carved pair of panels were sold as part of The Cold Overton Hall Collection, Sotheby's, October 10th 1986, lot 48. A chair table in Red Lodge Museum, Bristol, bears the double-headed eagle motif and indeed the supporters to the Coat of Arms of the City of Salisbury are also double headed eagles. (See Victor Chinnery, Oak Furniture, The British Tradition, Woodbridge, 1979, Frontispiece).
