Lot Essay

This deceptively conventional kitchen armchair, of a type made in large quantities by chairmakers in the Thames Valley area, was in fact made in the Mendelsham chairmaking tradition in Suffolk, this rare example has the turned scribe lines at leg and stretcher mortice points and a seat which is bevelled around the edges underneath, both of which are highly diagnostic of chairs made in this East Anglian tradtion. The more conventional Mendelsham chair in the adjacent lot also demonstrates these features.
