Beer coasters date back to the 17th century. There purpose was to circulate heavy beer laden leather bombards and jacks around the dining tables of colleges or any other institutions where mass catering might have taken place. Larger coasters came in the form of barrels mounted on platforms that were wheeled between the tables on the floor. The latter were often emblazoned with the arms of the institute or college.
