Lot Essay

This cupboard has many features which indicate its West Country origins, including the use of bead moulded edges to the corners of the front; deep drawers; square doors which are framed and flat panelled, and a flat board forming the top of the shallow overhanging cornice. The particular form of panelling on the sides with a smaller panel at the top and a larger one below which reflects the size of the drawers and doors is, too, often a feature of pieces from the West Country, although not unique to this region. Other cupboards of this general type were made in Somerset, often with wood panelled doors on the two outer cupboard doors of the top and with square or diamond shaped panes of glass in the central cupboard door.
