JOHNSTON'S EIGHTEEN INCH TERRESTRIAL GLOBE Containing all the Latest Geographical Discoveries. 1871. W. & A.K. JOHNSTON Geographers & Engravers to the Queen. 4 St Andrews Square Edinburgh The globe is made up of two sets of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores laid onto a wood and plaster sphere. The equatorial is graduated in degrees of amplitude and azimuth, and in hours and minutes; the Greenwich meridian and three other colures are all graduated in degrees; the ecliptic is graduated in twelve times 1-30°, with sigils for the houses of the Zodiac. The oceans show an analemma, the tracks of various explorers including Cook, la Perouse, Vancouver and others, with numerous notes and dates. Antarctica is shown by several small stretches of coastline, each with notes regarding their discovery. The continents are variously coloured in shades of yellow and green and are well-detailed, showing rivers, mountains, deserts, towns and cities (numerous areas of discolouration, scratches, abrasions and chips to varnish). The stamped brass meridian ring is divided in four quadrants; the engraved paper horizon circle shows degrees of amplitude and azimuth, compass directions, days of the month and days of the houses of the Zodiac. The pale mahogany stand consists of a horizon circle supported on four turned legs
